This track landed at Global Frequency HQ today and is already firmly on repeat. I’m still trying to work out how a track with a main hook that sings ‘nothing but a heartache’ can sound so uplifting!
This is actually a rework of a classic track by The Flirtations from 1968 by Swedish producers Tobtok and Oliver Nelson. These two are no slouches with over a billion streams of their music between them. Apparently, they’ve always loved this track, as have plenty of others – it became a favorite in the northern soul scene where it’s now viewed as a classic.
The Flirtations recorded two albums with the legendary Decca Records back in the late 60s and early 70’s and ‘Nothing But A Heartache’ was one of the tracks included, going on to reach #38 in the Billboard Hot 100. Fast forward to 2022 – Decca’s A&R team went back to the vaults to find the original master and asked the Swedish duo to work on a new version.
The prolific producers set to work, keen to preserve the magic of the original, while updating it for a new generation of listeners. The stunning vocal talents of The Flirtations shine through, and the result is an uplifting, soulful dance tune set to rule the airwaves as we close out the summer.
