There’s an equal mix of anticipation and excitement bubbling about the imminent arrival of Underplayed – a film shining the spotlight on the lack of inclusivity for women in dance music.
Sponsored by Bud Light Canada, Underplayed presents a portrait of the current status of gender, ethnic, and sexual equality issues through the lens of the female pioneers, next-generation artists, and industry leaders who are championing the change, and inspiring a more diverse pool of role models for future generations.
Filmed over the summer festival season, the trailer shows REZZ, NERVO, Anna Lunoe, Alison Wonderland and TOKiMONSTA, and from a guy’s point of view, Mark Ronson, talking about their own experiences of gender disparity.
The trailer gets us to consider – electronic music was born from the ideals of diversity, community, and inclusivity, and yet in 2019 only 5 of the top 100 DJs were women… Ultimately, this is a film exploring a theme that transcends music and finds relevance in many other industries today.
Underplayed premieres at the Toronto Film Festival 2020 on 19th September. Tickets are on sale from 5th September. Learn more at underplayedthefilm.com
