Nashville’s Mokita follows a strong run of releases in 2020 with his latest single, Over You. Like his other work, Over You bridges Mokita’s classical training and upbringing on singer-songwriters like John Mayer and James Taylor, with his work as a producer and penchant for crafting layered and atmospheric modern electro-pop.
The opening acoustic guitar chords are so delicate and effortlessly fitting for the emotive, heartfelt lyrics that detail this contemporary love song. Mokita explained;
“I wanted to write the lyrics of Over You in the format of a letter… When I was in high school, I went through my first bad breakup and I remember I used to write these letters to my ex that I knew I was never going to send. In knowing I wasn’t going to send them gave me this sort of freedom to be more honest and completely blunt, and ask almost rhetorical questions that I know she’d never be able to answer, because there wasn’t an answer to them. That’s what this song is at its core. There can be so much therapy in just writing something down, even if you know no one’s ever going to see it.”
Mokita has come a long way since he began releasing solo material in 2016. What remains central to his growing success is a unique voice and a lyric-focused foundation in every release. We’re excited to see where he goes next.
