If you haven’t yet checked out the 2021 musical of Cinderella, we strongly recommend setting aside a couple of hours and getting lost in this triumph of a remake.
Probably not for the musical-hater however, Cinderella is a musically-driven bold new take on the traditional story you grew up with. The heroine (Camila Cabello) is an ambitious young woman whose dreams are bigger than the world will allow, but with the help of her Fabulous G (Billy Porter), she is able to persevere and make her dreams come true.
Billy Porter steals the show in his non-gender portrayal of the Fairy Godmother, and my can he sing! The sound track overall is one of the film’s biggest wins. From Madonna’s ‘Material Girl’ and a mash-up of Salt-N-Peppa / En Vogue’s ‘Whatta Man’ with The White Stripes’ ‘Seven Nation Army’ at the Prince’s Ball, there’s so much to like about it.
Written for the screen and directed by Kay Cannon with covers of songs written by some of the top-selling musical artists of all time, Cinderella has an all-star cast that includes Idina Menzel, Minnie Driver, Nicholas Galitzine, and Pierce Brosnan. UK comedian Rob Beckett gets a special out from Global Frequency for his creepy (pervy) characterisation of a potential suitor for Ella and her stepsisters.
Producers are James Corden (who also plays one of the mice-turned-footmen alongside James Acaster and Romesh Ranganathan), Leo Pearlman, Jonathan Kadin and Shannon McIntosh, and executive producers are Louise Rosner and Josephine Rose.
Cinderella is available to watch now in cinemas and on Amazon. Checkout the trailer below.
